On the Construction of the Working Process of Machines with Intermediate Use of Steam

This preliminary communication addresses the graphical construction of operating processes for steam machines in which steam is used at an intermediate stage. Ugarov proposes introducing an additional ideal cylinder, with piston stroke equal to that of the working cylinders and with piston area and clearance space dependent on the amount of steam extracted from the machine. By reducing all cylinders, including the ideal one, to the piston area of the low-pressure cylinder, the method is intended to make possible the construction of Schröter diagrams for varying machine loads and quantities of extracted steam.

On the Construction of the Operating Process of Machines with Intermediate Use of Steam.
(Preliminary communication).
In designing machines with intermediate use of steam, it is important to obtain a graphical representation of the operating process of the machine, since from the constructed indicator diagrams one can very clearly and easily determine the change in the operating process that occurs as a result of changes both in the load of the machine itself and in the quantity of steam taken from the machine.
Indicator diagrams of machines of this kind can be constructed easily if we introduce into consideration an additional—ideal—cylinder, with a piston stroke equal to the stroke of the pistons of the working cylinders, and with piston area and clearance space that are functions of the quantity of steam taken from the machine.
By reducing all the cylinders of the machine (including the ideal one) to the piston area of the low-pressure cylinder, we obtain the possibility of constructing Schröter diagrams for the most varied cases of steam use, as will be shown in the detailed article that I am preparing for publication.
