Abstract Generated abstract

This paper reports S. I. Shubin’s presentation of A. K. Ivanov’s 1920 magnetic determinations at points in the Minusinsk region. The measurements used oscillation and deflection observations to estimate the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field, with constants obtained by comparison with Bauer’s magnetometer and with temperature reduction to 20 degrees Celsius. The tabulated results give coordinates, observation times, field values from oscillations and deflections, and, where available, differences from B. P. Weinberg’s 1915 determinations, without applying corrections for diurnal or annual variation.

Results of A. K. Ivanov’s Magnetic Determinations in the Minusinsk Region

At 12 points A. K. Ivanov observed both oscillations (2 series of 15 oscillations after 7 swings, so that 15 values were obtained for 105 oscillations) and deflections (1 series of 4 deflections). Comparison of the values of \(H\) from oscillations and deflections indicates that the magnetic moment may be considered constant within the limits of the observational errors (comparatively large for observations of deflections). The value was calculated by the formula

\[ H_{\text{osc.}} = C_1 / T_{20}^{2} \quad \text{and} \quad H_{\text{defl.}} = C_2 / \sin \alpha_{20}, \]

where \(C_1\) and \(C_2\) are constants determined by comparison with Bauer’s magnetometer, and \(T_{20}\) and \(\alpha_{20}\) are the period of oscillation and the angle of deflection, reduced to \(20^\circ\) C.

The results of the determinations are expressed in the following table, in which the geographical coordinates of those villages where there are no astronomical points are taken from the map. No corrections for either diurnal or annual variation have been introduced into the values of \(H\). The last column gives the differences of the values of \(H\) according to the determinations of A. K. Ivanov in 1920 and Prof. B. P. Weinberg in 1915, in .0001 C.G.S.
