Book review: P. Walden. Das Leitvermögen der Lösungen.
Full Text
Paul Walden. Das Leitvermögen der Lösungen. Part I, Vol. IV of the Handbuch der allgemeinen Chemie, edited by Wilhelm Ostwald and C. Drucker, Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft, 1924. IX, p. 383.
P. Walden, Electrical Conductivity of Solutions.
The first volume of this book, written with the author’s characteristic elegance and clarity, on the electrical properties of solutions, considers the following questions: methodology, historical development, water as solvent and ionizing substance, the influence of physical factors on the electrical conductivity of solutions, Hittorf’s work, Kohlrausch’s law of the independent migration of ions, and the influence of the size of the electrolyte molecule on electrical conductivity and the rate of migration of ions.
The book will undoubtedly become a standard work in every laboratory. As in all his works, P. I. Walden gives exhaustive literature. Name and subject indexes will probably be appended at the end of the entire work, which is planned in three issues.
