An Apparatus for Obtaining Hydrogen in Laboratories.
(The article includes 1 figure).
The apparatus is arranged on the principle of communicating vessels and consists of the following parts (see fig.).
A—A cylinder for zinc, made from the throat of a distillation flask.
B—A vessel for sulfuric acid.
Both parts A and B are fastened by means of movable clamps on a single stand.
C—A glass stopcock, connected with the delivery tube by means of rubber D; it may be replaced by a clamp.
K—Rubber tube.
Z—Glass tube.
F—A porcelain plate from a Gooch crucible.
E—Hydrogen delivery tube.
The spent acid, without interrupting the operation and without admitting air into the apparatus, can be drained off through stopcock C. This circumstance, and the small capacity of the apparatus, make it very economical in its consumption of zinc and acid.
