The second chapter considers the application of the principles of thermodynamics and quantum theory to the study of living matter. The third chapter deals with the application of the theory of solutions to the study of vital phenomena. The fourth chapter concerns the relationship between living and nonliving matter and the origin of life. In the third part Acad. Lazarev also sets forth the foundations of the theory of excitation that he has developed. The book is easy to read and may be recommended to all who wish to enter into the questions treated in it.
