CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS OF ELECTROMAGNETISM, a collection dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Moscow Magnetic Laboratory, pp. 176, 1919–1929, State Technical-Theoretical Publishing House; Moscow, 1931, price 4 rubles.

The collection touches upon rather diverse material concerning electromagnetic fields and the behavior in them of matter of ferromagnetic character, beginning with the problem of magnetometric investigation and its role among other methods in the study of ore deposits (Acad. P. P. Lazarev) and ending with the question of the resonance of magnetons (V. K. Arkadiev).

The latter field—molecular magnetism—is represented by several other works: by R. Gans (Königsberg), P. Weiss (Strasbourg), and N. S. Akulov, which touch upon questions of molecular magnetic fields, their energetic interpretation, and which give (in the last of these three works) formulas for calculating the internal field in the case of a complex dipole lattice.

Another group of works in the collection consists of articles devoted to questions of radiant energy: A. A. Glagoleva-Arkadieva establishes the distribution of the radiation energy of a mass radiator and the negligible influence of the material of the grains of a vibrational mixture on the radiation power. In another of his works the results are given of an investigation of the composition of the radiation of a mass radiator; the intervals of experiments shown agree with earlier experiments, but give much purer interference curves. Other works in the collection relating to radiant energy belong to Gustav Mie and Freedericksz (“On precise measurements of the electric refractive index”) and to V. K. Arkadiev (“Analysis of works on the dependence of magnetic permeability on the frequency of an electromagnetic field”).

A number of works are devoted to experimental investigations of ferromagnetics in a high-frequency field. These include: the work of K. A. Volkova, who investigated, in constant and alternating fields (within the range from 75 to 135 m), ferromagnetics of low electrical conductivity—magnetite, ferrosilicon, and ferrotitanium; the work of N. N. Malov, who investigated in the region of kilometer waves iron and steel wires and plates; and A. A. Ermolaev, who measured, in iron at low frequency, electrical and magnetic losses and established that the theory of V. K. Arkadiev and the tables of B. A. Vvedensky give a greater degree of accuracy in calculation than the old methods of Steinmetz and Trucco. To the same group of works should be assigned the article by M. M. Chetveryakova on the study of small

samples of iron; closely related to this is the work of N. N. Malov, V. K. Mityaev, and S. N. Rzhevkin on the oscillations of ferromagnetic rods in an alternating field. To complete the contents of the collection, the works named should be joined by the articles of A. I. Bachinsky and L. Mirlas.

The present brief list covers only a small fraction of all the works that have come from the Moscow Magnetic Laboratory. One cannot help expressing the wish that, for the forthcoming fifteenth anniversary of the laboratory, its work be summed up and that the results of individual investigations published in various journals and collections appear in connected form, for better use of the laboratory’s experience.
