The present book constitutes the first third of a large work devoted to the behavior of metals in electric and magnetic fields. The phenomena occurring in metals are considered from both the theoretical and the applied points of view, and the description of the processes is carried out with the aid of the mean characteristics of matter: dielectric constant, magnetic permeability, conductivity, etc.

The author proceeds from the modern data of metallography (Chapter I) and, after considering in the next two chapters electric and magnetic fields of various types, turns to an analysis of the electrical properties of metallic conductors (Chapter IV). The following chapters (V—IX) are devoted to the more complex sections of magnetostatics—the magnetization of ferromagnetic substances, the theory of electric and magnetic polarization (Chapters VI and VII), the mechanical forces and energy of the magnetic field (Chapter VIII), and the magnetostatics of cores and permanent magnets.

One of the features of the book is the systematic bringing out of analogies between electric and magnetic fields, the phenomena of electric and magnetic polarization, etc. At the appropriate places, analogies are also introduced with phenomena of heat conduction, hydrodynamics, and others.

In describing the phenomena, the author, proceeding from general theoretical propositions, carries the analysis of questions through to concrete particular problems. This gives a close connection between general scientific principles and individual practical questions. In V. K. Arkadiev’s book, for the first time in Russian, a large number of diverse problems of the magnetization of bodies of all possible forms in a constant magnetic field is set forth systematically. This material, supplied with a number of tables and graphs, is presented with special emphasis on those important differences that must be kept in view when using the different varieties of magnetic coefficients (permeability, susceptibility). In this respect the book will prove indispensable both for physicists and for electrical engineers engaged in calculations of electromagnetic apparatus.

The exposition, in which there is much that is new both in the selection and in the arrangement of the material, is distinguished by clarity and precision.

From the external side the book is published satisfactorily, although a few typographical defects are encountered. The paper leaves something to be desired, and some drawings on it do not have a sufficiently clear appearance. It is also not clear why a book so valuable in its content was issued by the publishing house without a binding.
