The present volume contains an account of the evolution of physics approximately from 1780 to 1840. It covers the material preparing the discovery of the law of conservation of energy. An account both of the history of the discovery itself and of the reform of all physics caused by it will be placed in the next issue of the 3rd volume. The history of the decomposition of the doctrine of imponderables (the period approximately from 1780 to 1815) and the history of the convertibility of the various forms of energy, or “forces,” as they were called according to the old terminology, are set forth in detail by F. Rosenberger (the period approximately from 1815 to 1840). A name and subject index is provided.
The book is intended for scientific workers.
