The main attention is devoted to determining the distance between the discrete vortices that are formed in the breakup of unstable vortex layers. Rayleigh’s results concerning the stability of rectilinear layers are supplemented by a detailed investigation of the case of two parallel vortex layers.

The text gives descriptions of 74 problems, and at the end of the book there are 46 tables of physical quantities and 12 tables for computation. For each problem, a description is given of the apparatus, operations, and measurements necessary for its solution; the formula is provided by which the desired quantity is to be calculated; and literature on the given question is indicated.
