The author divides this epoch into 4 periods: the rise of the new physics (from 1600 to 1650), the predominance of experimental physics (from 1650 to 1690), the predominance of mathematical physics (from 1690 to 1750), and the period of frictional electricity (from 1750 to 1780). The works of those scholars on whom modern science is largely based are presented in considerable detail, as are certain physical theories that had enormous importance for their time but have lost it for our time.
