In a series of engagingly written essays, the author reconstructs the history of the discovery of X-rays. The book cites a number of responses to this discovery that appeared in print soon after it was made, and reproduces a number of radiographs obtained by Röntgen himself. In the concluding essay, “Forty Years Later,” the author gives a brief survey of contemporary applications of X-rays in various branches of science and technology.

The book is intended for readers familiar with physics at the level of a secondary-school course.

The author introduces boundary conditions on the wall different from Mattioli’s, allowing for the existence there of a viscous layer. The application of these conditions leads the author to a new formula for resistance, correct, according to Nikuradze’s experiments, down to the very small Reynolds numbers, i.e., taking viscosity into account.
