The author set himself the task of giving a practical exposition of various electrometric and colorimetric methods for determining the concentration of hydrogen ions, of showing the fundamental significance of the concentration of hydrogen ions in the field of general chemistry (including volumetric and gravimetric analysis), and of outlining the essential role played by the concentration of hydrogen ions in numerous processes of the chemical industry.

In discussing each method, a detailed description is given of one variant of the experiment, with indications of the convenience and accuracy of the method, as well as of those corrections which should be introduced to increase the accuracy of the final result. A separate chapter is devoted to the theory of these corrections.

A reference book on light filters. In its first two chapters, intended for students of physics faculties, the author examines the physical nature of absorption and non-absorption light filters, and in the following four chapters gives methods for preparing recipes for light filters for various purposes. Besides literary data, he made extensive use of unpublished materials of the State Optical Institute. In an appendix, illustrated with 35 curves, light filters of various firms are described.

A biography of the eminent English physicist who discovered the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction and established the identity of all forms of electricity. Faraday’s “Experimental Researches in Electricity,” written from 1830 to 1840, were the greatest contribution to the theory of electricity. Faraday’s works laid the foundations of modern conceptions of electricity, which he studied for about half a century. The appendices to the book publish the following works: Faraday’s letter to Phillips of November 29, 1831, a description by Faraday of a “new electrical machine” (the first electromagnetic generator), and Joseph Henry’s article “On the Production of Electric Currents and Sparks from Magnetism.”

The book contains an exposition of the basic information on the principal divisions of geophysics, with the exception of questions relating to the hydrosphere. The chief attention is devoted to the exposition of the theoretical foundations of geophysics and to the explanation of observed phenomena; at the same time the author makes broad use of the data of physics, mathematics, and mechanics. Comparatively little space is devoted to questions of observational methods and applied geophysics. The first eight chapters of the book cover mainly questions of the general structure of the terrestrial globe and its solid shell, while the last five are devoted to questions of the physics of the atmosphere. The book represents an extended presentation of lectures delivered by the author at the Physics Faculty of Leningrad State University. The third edition is considerably

revised. It is intended as a teaching aid for a course in geophysics at universities and higher technical schools, and as a guide for physicists, geologists, mining engineers, meteorologists, and graduate students in geophysics.
