In comparison with the 1935 edition, changes and additions have been introduced into the book.

The book is a revised and expanded biography of Lomonosov, written by the author on commission from the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences in 1911. The author used new materials discovered over the past 25 years and set out somewhat more than was possible under the censorship conditions of that time. The third section of the book is devoted entirely to Lomonosov’s work in physics. In addition, a considerable amount of information on his works in physics, geophysics, chemistry, and physical chemistry is scattered in other sections of the book.

The paper studies vertical oscillations of the center of gravity of a solid body floating on the surface of a heavy liquid. In setting up the equation of the body’s oscillatory motion, the loss of the body’s energy in the formation of waves is taken into account. The author gives a general formula for determining the ordinate of the body’s center of gravity as a function of time and obtains from it an asymptotic formula that has greater force for large values of time. The problem being solved is the simplest problem in the hydrodynamic theory of the rolling of ships.
