The book is the principal textbook of physics for students of medical higher educational institutions, but it may also be used by students of biological and chemical faculties of universities and pedagogical institutes. In the third edition the section “Heat and Molecular Physics” has been substantially revised and expanded, and the chapters “Constituent Elements of the Atomic Nucleus” and “Introduction to the Study of Electricity” have been rewritten.

A considerable part of the problems presented has been borrowed from the practice of physical experiment. Most of them should be classed as difficult. As exercises for a general physics course, no more than half of the proposed problems can be used; the rest are intended for work in special physical disciplines and for independent studies by graduate students and instructors. The collection contains 487 problems.

The collection contains 769 problems.

The experiment was carried out on a special installation; moreover, by the use of micro-nozzles, the interesting region of the flow near the outer boundary of the laminar sublayer was investigated with particular care, which distinguishes this work from those of Nikuradse. The intensity of friction was determined by measuring the static pressure gradient.

The first article gives a detailed exposition of Dryden’s theory of the thermal inertia of the instrument, a description of working circuits, and the adopted calibration method. The considerations contained in the article can be applied to the study of specific flows. The second article presents the results of experiments carried out in order to clarify the possibility of studying turbulence by measuring the pulsation component of the pressure at the stagnation point of a body being streamlined. The pressure was measured with the aid of a condenser microphone placed in the streamline body and connected with the corresponding electrical measuring installation.

The article contains a solution, by a new method, of the problem of the gliding along the surface of a heavy incompressible infinitely deep liquid of a slightly curved plate of infinite span. The problem is reduced to the solution of an integral equation, which, in the case of large Froude numbers, is solved to the end. The calculation of the forces acting on the plate is carried out, and, as the simplest example, the gliding of a flat plate is considered.

In the second edition some elementary experiments have been replaced by more complex ones.

The book covers all divisions of physics according to the programs of the physics-and-mathematics faculties of universities. The introduction describes methods of physical measurements, computing instruments, and basic measuring instruments. The text gives descriptions of 74 problems, and at the end of the book are placed 46 tables of physical quantities and 12 tables for calculations. For each problem a description is given of the instruments, manipulations, and measurements necessary for its
solutions, a formula is given by which the desired quantity should be calculated, and the literature on the given question is indicated. Contrary to the indication on the title page, the fourth edition has been reprinted, almost without changes, from the third, published in 1937.
