The book is a translation of the new, considerably expanded edition (1935) of the book The Electron, the Russian translation of which appeared in 1924. It is devoted chiefly to the exposition of Millikan’s own classical works. These experimental works of Millikan cover a very wide range of problems in atomic physics: proof of the discreteness of electric charges and precise determination of the absolute magnitude of the electron charge, experimental confirmation of Einstein’s equation and precise determination of Planck’s constant, study of the region of the spectrum lying between ultraviolet and X-rays, proof of the universal applicability of Moseley’s law, and finally the study of the nature and properties of cosmic rays, which served as the impulse for the discovery of the positron. Against the background of his own works the author also presents the state of those problems to which they are devoted, as a result of which the book provides a fairly complete outline of modern atomic physics.

In revised and supplemented form it gives the modern theory of the unsteady motion of a wing of infinite span when moving with shed vortices. A number of new effective methods are developed in the theory of jets, in the theory of motion of a fluid in multiply connected domains (the theory of gratings, the problem of a biplane), in the theory of impact on an incompressible fluid, and in several other related problems.
