The book is the first systematic course of theoretical astrophysics in the Russian language. The book considers the theory of the outer layers of stars and the theory of ionization in stellar atmospheres in connection with the interpretation of stellar spectra. Special attention is given to the solar atmosphere, in particular to the chromosphere and corona. Further, questions of the physics of gaseous nebulae (planetary and diffuse) are analyzed in detail. The question of the state of interstellar matter is considered. The basic ideas connected with novae outbursts, and also with the continuous outflow of matter from the surfaces of Wolf—Rayet type stars, are set forth. In the last chapter the basic questions of the theory of the internal structure of stars are presented.

The book, containing 194 problems, is intended for students of higher educational institutions and technical colleges studying geometrical optics. As the principal manual, with reference to which the problems are compiled, A. I. Tudorovskii’s course “Theory of Optical Instruments,” 1937, has been chosen. The first section (7–42) is devoted to the fundamental laws of geometrical optics. The second section (42–65) contains problems on reflection from plane and spherical mirrors and on refraction at plane and spherical surfaces. The third section (66–121) is devoted to the theory of the ideal optical system (Gaussian optics). In the fourth section (122–138) problems on the limitation of rays in optical systems, on the finding of pupils and apertures, etc., are grouped. The fifth section (139–151) is devoted to the optical instrument as a transmitter of light energy, to luminous flux, illumination, the luminous intensity of instruments, etc.
