A biography of a pioneer of electrification—the Russian electrical engineer-inventor Pavel Nikolaevich Yablochkov. In the first section of the book (7–56), solar radiation and its changes over time are studied and described, without taking into account the influence of the atmosphere. In the second section (57–126), the influence of the atmosphere on solar radiation is studied and the dependence between temperature and insolation is derived; as a result, the author finds it possible to construct a scheme of the solar climate of the terrestrial globe. This section is based on the laws and theories of physics. The third section (127–207) is devoted to the study of climate changes in Earth’s remote past, insofar as these changes were caused by changes in the amount of solar energy received by the Earth.

The first part of the book (13–154), written by S. A. Khristianovich, is devoted to the hydraulic theory of unsteady motions in canals and rivers. It contains an investigation of the Boussinesq equations and of various cases of unsteady motions. The second part (155–216), written by S. G. Mikhlin, is devoted to the mathematical theory of plasticity. Its main content is the investigation of the Saint-Venant equations for the plane problem, as well as the solution of several very simple problems on the propagation of a plastic state in an elastic medium. The third part (217–356), written by B. B. Davison, is devoted to the theory of ground waters. It contains the solution of the Forchheimer equation for various cases of plane free-surface motion, and also for unsteady pressure motion.

The aim of the work was an experimental investigation of a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer on various models: bodies of revolution at angles of attack 0, 11, 22°, a plate at zero angle of attack, and a wing at a positive angle of attack. As a result of the experiment there were obtained: the pressure distribution over the surface, velocity profiles, the thickness of the boundary layer, friction stress, the line of zero velocities in the region of separation, and displacement-path curves, which agree well with the Nikuradse curve obtained for an internal problem.
