In the second edition, shortcomings noted in the first (lithographed) edition have been corrected and a large number of new descriptions of experiments and tables have been added.

The author set himself the goal of developing methods that make it possible to see the wake behind poorly streamlined bodies. The work was carried out in small wind tunnels 10 and 50 cm in diameter at speeds up to 30 m/sec. The principal method was photographing flows, visualized in various ways, with the aid of an electric spark. The author obtained satisfactory photographs of the wake behind a body at Reynolds numbers up to 200,000.

The atlas and tables constitute a manual for the deciphering of spectrograms.

The work sets forth the general theory of diffusion in a turbulent flow, based on Taylor’s work, and is some basis for a method of measuring turbulence in aerodynamic tunnels by studying the diffusion of heat from a thin heated wire. The author advances the hypothesis of the constancy of the coefficient of turbulent diffusion in the transverse section of the jet. A description is given of the measuring apparatus and of the principal results of investigations connected with the development of the methodology and technique of the experiment. A comparison is made of the results of measurements by the thermal method with data from other methods.

This method reduces the solution of the boundary-value problem to a problem with initial conditions. For the approximate solution of linear differential equations with variable coefficients, under prescribed initial conditions, the article proposes a method that is technically simple and sufficiently accurate.
