The first chapter contains a critical review of certain theories that are of great interest in light of new ideas about the mechanism of lightning development. The third chapter describes the optical method of studying the process of lightning development, and the fourth considers the experimental part of the work carried out by the author during an expedition to the high-mountain Lake Sevan, and provides an analysis of the material obtained.

The book describes the methods and working conditions which at present may be considered the best for conducting the analysis of metals. The book includes all the principal applications of spectral methods to the semiquantitative and quantitative analysis of metals used by Soviet industry: analysis of alloy steels, analysis of light alloys based on aluminum and magnesium, and analysis of certain nonferrous metals. The first part of the book gives a detailed description of the recommended apparatus, methods, and working procedures, while the second part gives the working conditions and spectral lines separately for each application. All the material is designed for the use of widely distributed standard apparatus—a styloscope, a stylometer, and a spectrograph for the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.
