In preparing the present edition, the lithographed editions of 1887, 1888, 1889, and 1892 were used. The lectures on the dynamics of a rigid body constitute an additional (special) course comprising a two-hour lecture in the half-year. They were read from 1888 through 1911. The synopsis of these lectures, also never printed, compiled by student N. Guryev for the autumn semester of the 1888–89 academic year, was found among the manuscripts of N. E. Zhukovsky.

In the book, evaporation is considered as a complex phenomenon connected with various physical processes in the atmosphere, in waters, in the soil, and in plant cover. Since the principal role in evaporation is played by the balance of thermal energy and the transfer of water vapor mass from the evaporating surface into the thickness of the atmosphere, the author devotes the greatest attention to the meteorological factors of evaporation. The exposition is based on concrete examples that make it possible to reveal the features of evaporation under diverse geographical conditions. In doing so, the author gives considerable attention to a critical analysis both of the methodology and of the results of evaporation studies.
