The book is a systematic collection of exercises and problems in physics. It is divided into small sections, each of which is preceded by a brief introduction recalling the laws to which examples and problems are then given. These introductions contain formulas and the most necessary methodological instructions. Each section begins with very simple examples and ends with more difficult problems. In all, the collection contains 414 problems and exercises; in its content it corresponds to the physics curriculum for the first year of Leningrad State University.

The book primarily expounds the theory of integral invariants. This concept, introduced by Poincaré in connection with his mechanical investigations, receives, in Cartan’s exposition, a significant simplification in connection with the introduction of the differential of the independent variable; the totality of all integral invariants thereby proves easy to survey. In the book this theory is applied to a number of problems of analysis and mechanics. The mechanical applications require of the reader a general orientation in analytical mechanics and in the mechanics of continuous media. The book is of interest to specialists in mathematical physics.

The first part (5–39) sets forth the doctrine of the Earth as a cosmic body in connection with the motions of the terrestrial globe as a whole (rotation about its axis, revolution around the Sun, precession, nutation). This part discusses the form and dimensions of the terrestrial globe, the experimental study of Newton’s law, the determination of the mean density of the Earth, and the theory of the figure of the Earth. The second part (40–138) sets forth modern ideas about the motions of the Earth’s crust (mountain building, shifts, earthquakes). The second part concludes with a study of terrestrial magnetism and of the Sun’s radiation, which is the cause of climatic changes on the Earth’s surface.
