The books constitute the third part of a course in theoretical mechanics approved by the All-Union Committee for Higher School Affairs for students of the military academies of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army.

The exposition of mechanics is given in vector form, and it is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the elements of vector algebra.

The book was written by N. E. Zhukovsky’s niece on the basis of personal recollections and the accounts of close friends. The biography is divided into two parts, the first of which is devoted to N. E. Zhukovsky’s childhood and years of study, and the second to fifty years of his scientific activity. Following the text is a list of N. E. Zhukovsky’s printed works, compiled by N. M. Semenova, including 175 titles and the dates of his scientific and public activity.

The course in analytical mechanics was delivered by N. E. Zhukovsky at the Moscow Higher Technical School from 1874 to 1920. The course “Theory of Regulation of Machine Motion” was delivered by him there as an episodic course in 1908/09. “Applied Mechanics” is a popular course delivered by N. E. Zhukovsky over many years at the advanced secondary school—the Practical Academy of Commercial Sciences.

This course, delivered by N. E. Zhukovsky at Moscow University from 1886 to 1919, had never been printed. The present edition reproduces the lithographed edition of the student Rodzevich, issued in 1914. Some problems from the lithographed edition of 1887 have been added to it, and minor editorial corrections have been introduced.

For the present edition they have been distributed according to their content into three chapters: “Modification of Kirchhoff’s Method” (11–25), “Description of Airfoils, Theory of Gliding and Stability of Airplanes” (26–113), and “Theory of the Flight of Apparatus Lighter Than Air” (Spherical Aerostats, Theory of Flights, Di Zhabeli) (114–198).
