The present book is written in a highly elementary manner and is evidently intended for the beginning worker, who will find in it the basic elements of this subject. The book describes, chiefly, the known methods of producing and measuring high vacuum, and it contains no especially substantial or interesting innovations—for example, in comparison with the well-known Soviet book by A. A. Ivanov, Electrovacuum Technology, 1944—does not contain. One may note the presence in this book of useful data, arranged alphabetically, on the properties of certain vacuum materials, as well as a bibliographic index of the newest literature on vacuum technique, where, as often happens, very important works by Soviet—chiefly Kharkov—workers are not cited. Naturally, after reading this book one again wishes to see, as soon as possible, a new, supplemented edition of the above-mentioned Soviet book by A. A. Ivanov, which is undoubtedly one of the best publications of this kind.
