This preface introduces a collection devoted to the study and improvement of drilling equipment for mining, construction, and building materials production. It outlines experimental and design work conducted at Tomsk Polytechnic Institute in cooperation with industrial plants and research institutes, including laboratory and field investigations using strain-gauge measurement and oscillographic recording. The collection addresses pneumatic drilling hammers, supporting and feeding devices, solenoid impact machines, and rotary and rotary-percussive drilling methods, with the aim of transferring research results into industrial practice and supporting further development of high-productivity drilling machines and mechanisms.

PREFACE
The wide use of drilling-and-blasting operations at enterprises in our country creates a great need for drilling mechanisms. For the successful fulfillment of forward-looking plans for the development of the mining industry, road construction, and the production of building materials, a comprehensive study and improvement of the means and methods of carrying out drilling operations is necessary.
The drilling of blast holes in rocks of varying hardness is performed by machines of rotary, percussive, and rotary-percussive action. To determine the advantages of one or another drilling method under specific conditions, it is necessary to conduct experimental studies of serially produced and prototype machines, as well as to study and generalize the available operating performance indicators of the machines.
At the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, the study of drilling operations is being carried out by a large group of researchers closely connected with engineering and technical personnel of the Tomsk Electromechanical Plant, the Anzhero Machine-Building Plant, and also with staff members of the research institutes KuzNIIUI, Giproshakhtostroimash, VUGI, and others.
Under the direction of Prof. P. M. Alabuzhev and Assoc. Prof. O. D. Alimov, a number of original experimental stands have been created in the laboratories of the Department of Mining Machines and Mine Transport of the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, using strain-gauge measurement and oscillographic recording of the working characteristics of machines under laboratory and production conditions.
Several experimental models of long-stroke drilling machines and feeding devices have also been created and studied.
The articles presented in this collection cover mainly the following questions:
1) the study of the working process, operating regimes, and materials of parts of pneumatic drilling hammers;
2) the calculation and design of pneumatic drilling hammers;
3) the study of supporting-and-feeding devices for drilling hammers;
4) the creation and study of solenoid impact machines;
5) investigation of rotary and rotary-percussive methods for drilling boreholes and wells.
The purpose of the present collection is the broader introduction into the practice of production enterprises of the results of completed scientific-research and experimental-design work, as well as the exchange of experience with other institutes and enterprises working in the field of improving drilling equipment and other impact-action machines.
In connection with the tasks set for the industry of the USSR by the seven-year plan, the work of the authors’ collective is directed toward the further improvement of long-stroke drilling machines, the creation for them of manipulators and drilling carriages, and also toward the development of the theory and methods of calculation of new high-productivity machines and mechanisms for drilling boreholes and wells in coal and rocks of various hardness.
