On November 22, 1969, 50 years had passed since the birth and 25 years since the beginning of the professional and scientific-pedagogical activity of the head of the Department of “Exploration Techniques” of the TPI, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Stepan Stepanovich Sulakshin, member of the CPSU since 1943.

S. S. Sulakshin was born in the village of Lovlinskaya, Krasnodar Krai, into the family of a rural teacher. Having graduated from secondary school with honors in 1938, he entered the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute named after S. Ordzhonikidze.

During the years of the Great Patriotic War, S. S. Sulakshin volunteered for the active army; after being wounded and treated, he completed junior-lieutenant courses and returned to the front. In June 1944, after a second severe wound, he was demobilized with the rank of captain.

In 1948 S. S. Sulakshin defended his diploma project at MGRI and was sent to postgraduate study, which he completed under the supervision of Professor B. I. Vozdvizhensky. After the successful defense of his Candidate dissertation in 1952, S. S. Sulakshin was assigned to TPI, where in 1954 he was elected head of the Department of “Exploration Techniques” and was confirmed in the academic rank of docent.

Over 15 years of work in this position, S. S. Sulakshin devoted much effort and energy to the development of the department and of the young specialty “Technology and Techniques of MPI Exploration.” Under his leadership, an educational base was created, equipped with modern technology; the department’s instructional library, all necessary teaching-methodological documentation, and a staff of highly qualified instructors were established. Under the leadership of S. S. Sulakshin, 367 engineers were graduated in the specialty “Technology and Techniques of MPI Exploration,” and 18 Candidates of Technical Sciences were trained.

During his scientific activity, S. S. Sulakshin, personally and in coauthorship, carried out 133 scientific works; wrote 35 scientific reports, methodological manuals, and instructions; published 2 textbooks for higher educational institutions and one for technical schools; on 17 completed works he received certificates of registration with the Committee for Inventions and Discoveries, and on four—authors’ certificates. The logical culmination of the scientific research in the field of directional drilling and the selection of high-quality samples of useful minerals carried out by S. S. Sulakshin was the successful defense in 1965 of his doctoral dissertation and his confirmation in 1967 in the rank of professor.

An outstanding scholar in the field of exploration drilling, a highly qualified educator and lecturer, Stepan Stepanovich Sulakshin is widely known among workers of the geological exploration service, staff of scientific geological exploration institutions, and also among students of geological exploration specialties in our country.

As a participant in the Great Patriotic War, S. S. Sulakshin was awarded the Order of the Red Star and four medals.

The public of the geological exploration faculty of TPI expresses deep gratitude to the jubilarian for his many years of selfless labor in educating specialists, as well as in training scientific-pedagogical personnel, and wishes him further fruitful, creative work and many years of life.
