This study evaluates the availability of light hydrocarbons, C3 to C5, in crude oil supplied through the Aleksandrovskoye to Anzhero-Sudzhensk pipeline for use as pyrolysis feedstock at the Tomsk Petrochemical Plant. Oil samples collected in July and December 1972 at upstream pipeline points and at the plant tie-in were analyzed for dissolved gases and light hydrocarbons by gas liquid chromatography using the VNII NP method. The results show that typical crude contained 24.5 kg/t of hydrocarbons up to C5 in summer and 39.7 kg/t in winter at the initial sampling point, with C3 to C5 components forming nearly all of this fraction. Transportation losses were higher in summer than winter, reaching 11.8 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively, for hydrocarbons up to C5.

Light hydrocarbons—$C_3$–$C_5$—are a valuable feedstock for many large-scale petrochemical industries. The broad stabilization fraction of typical crude oil from the Aleksandrovskoye–Anzhero-Sudzhensk oil pipeline is intended to serve as the initial feedstock for the pyrolysis process at the Tomsk Petrochemical Plant [1]. In this connection, it was necessary to determine the resources of light hydrocarbons in the crudes delivered to the plant in summer and winter.

Crude-oil samples were taken from the Aleksandrovskoye–Anzhero-Sudzhensk oil pipeline at the main oil-pumping station in the settlement of Strezhevoy and from the fitting at the tie-in for the Tomsk Petrochemical Plant (settlement of Orlovka) in July and December 1972.

The content of dissolved gases in the oil was determined by gas–liquid chromatography according to the VNII NP method [2]. The results of these studies are presented in Table 1.

The content of light hydrocarbons up to $C_5$ in the typical crude oil sampled at the initial point of the pipeline was 39.7 kg/t in winter and 24.5 kg/t of oil in summer; moreover, the principal share falls on the most valuable hydrocarbons $C_3$–$C_5$ (97% in winter; 99% in summer).

During transportation of the oil from Aleksandrovskoye to the industrial site of the petrochemical plant, hydrocarbons are lost both up to $C_4$ and up to $C_5$, as is evident from the data in Table 2.

Losses of light hydrocarbons in summer are significantly greater than in winter and amount, up to $C_5$, to 11.8% in summer and 6.3% in winter of their total content in the oil.
